Chapter 5

Robbie had been at their house for the past eight days. Booker didn’t remember himself being so curious about everything. Booker was completely in awe of how many questions a kid could ask about just about anything and everything. Yesterday and today had been a marathon of questions. Robbie could have easily held the gold metal if it were an Olympic event. They’d been cleaning out storage lockers. All the uncles and his dad had one. His dad’s just happen to be the largest of the five.

“Booker, do you think Grandda Josiah will let me take this back to your house? I’d like to put it in my window.”

Taking it from him, Booker looked at the piece of art. He wasn’t up on artists of any kind, but he had a feeling this piece had cost Dad quite a bit. “I don’t know, son. I don’t even know what it is, do you?”

“It’s pretty.” That’s another thing he’d discovered. Kid logic was absolutely no logic at all to an adult. “I think if the sun were to shine through it, it would make the room just about bust with colors.”

“What do you have there, Robbie?” Robbie handed the glass piece to his grandda. “I think I picked this up in Turkey when I was there. There might have been…ah, here it is. Yes. Turkey. It’s a piece of glass that was made when lightning struck the sand. There are these groups of men that go around chasing lightning, and then finding these things in the sand. Then they take them back to their homes and paint things on them. I’d forgotten about this piece. Did you want it?”

After Robbie rolled away, Booker looked at his dad as he stared after the little boy. After saying his name several times, he finally turned to him. After a quick tight hug, Dad sat down on one of the many boxes they’d filled up.

“He’s a great kid. I’d give him just about anything he wanted if he were to ask me for it. But I won’t do that. I can’t, actually. I’m afraid of Charlie.” They both laughed. “But seriously, what am I supposed to do with all this stuff? I do want a few of the larger pieces. Like that chair there. I want that for my room. And the books. I’d forgotten I’d collected them at airports and put them away so that your mother wouldn’t find them. They weren’t classics, so they didn’t need to be read.”

“I remember her getting upset with me when I had a few paperbacks. I like the books too. But I’m enjoying the reader I got for myself. It’s very convenient.” Booker ran his hand over the table that his dad had collected and turned to look at him. “We’ve been talking around this for days now. Or at least you have. Tell me what has you so uptight. And please don’t blow me off. You’re making me nervous.”

“I’ve met someone.” Booker hugged his dad tightly again.
